OVERVIEW

With the NUHAT project, the Goethe-Institut Iraq in cooperation with the Duhok IFF contributes to strengthening the capacities of young emerging filmmakers. The project aims to support the development of crisis-proof models for film production in the long term. In a tensive training program, filmmakers from across the Kurdistan region and Iraq are invited to develop their skills in directing, producing, cinematography and screenwriting. The program culminates in a week-long classroom workshop at Duhok IFF, where participants develop their own project ideas into mature film productions in collaboration with other participants. The project ideas are pitched to a jury and the best ideas are selected for seed funding by Duhok IFF and the Goethe Institut-Irak.

In a unique way, “Nuhat” brings a new concept to support young filmmakers who have been affected by the pandemic, offering them capacity building workshops, financial support and networking opportunities, where they can find their potential job market, as well as a hub where they can all connect, share their ideas and apply them in reality.

The program brings new dimensions to the cinema-going experience, giving a chance to the local youth to develop and sharpen their existing skills and maintain their network and existence with the platform Duhok IFF provides. This is important as the entire event is closely linked to the festival sections. The program also aims to offer the talents a chance to learn under professional mentoring, develop their skills orally or in writing, meet and discover young talent alike, and offer them an opportunity to convert their ideas to projects.

WORKSHOPS

Nuhat launches its project with an onlinee-learning platform that provides educational courses (professional) in the key areas of filmmaking, from script to screen, such as directing, producing, and cinematography, while also offering aspiring filmmakers a unique program that uses advanced training methods in film and media to prepare them for career entry or advancement in their chosen occupations as a part of recovery from the pandemic that have affected the industry.

DIRECTING CHAIR

The Directing Chair offers a creative workshop for emerging talent directors in a training program committed to increasing the creative, artistic value of talents working professionally in screen directing. This program provides the participants an intensive training course in narrative filmmaking in an innovative workshop. As the idea behind the Directing Chair is also to enable directors to embody writers, vision and assist themselves in visualizing what the scriptwriters have written so far.

CAMERA CORNER

This course is designed to teach the trainees the ins and outs of professional cinematography - the art of making motion pictures in bringing a director's vision to life.
Cinematography will be taught in the context of today ’s media landscape, where trainees will learn how to use camera and lighting to tell a story , as well as the frames, the angles, the colors and a little bit of art/set direction.

PRODUCTION ROOM

The production room supports emerging producers in getting ready for the marketplace.
Under the guidance of a professional pitching trainer, new talents will get the opportunity to analyze their project ideas thoroughly and package them in written and oral presentations. At the end of the program, the participants (producers with their crew) will present their projects in a public pitch to the jury and their colleagues from Nuhat. Furthermore, the jury will give feedback on the participants, presentations and choose the Best Pitch.

SCRIPT TABLE

Script Table offers practical guidance, enabling the participants to refine their craft and imagination. The table will consist of a series of group and one-on-one meetings between the trainer and Nuhat scriptwriters.
The goal of the Script Table is to open space for constructive discussions on projects and encourage their further
developments.
